Exclamation This is to PSA Josie

Hi,

I was told that your my Career Coach. But any how the name is Sarah and I've become quit fond planes and so forth. I'm wanting to become a Regional Pilot for my career and I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. Also, I'm attending New River Community College right now and I plan on taking the aviation course they offer and it's a Private Ground School to get your license. One last thing I'm glad to be paired up with you.

Hi Sarah,

It's nice to meet you! It's so exciting to get your career kicked started. It's a lot of work, but well worth it once you are sitting up front taking off for the first time. Like you, I started my private license with someone other than ATP. Looking back I wish I hadn't for money reasons. I ended up spending a lot more because it took so long. But at the same time, it was good because I wasn't 100% sure this was what I wanted to do.

Once I started at ATP, I knew I made a good choice. It would have taken me probably 5 years total to finish and get enough flight hours from instructing at a local FBO if I finished at the place I got my private. When I started ATP, I was working for an airline in a year, so crazy! It was the best choice for me. But make sure to do all the research so you'll know it's the best choice for you too!

I look forward to helping you answer all your questions. Have a Merry Christmas!

Josie

Exclamation Questions About Getting Started...

Hi Josie,

I know it'll probably be after Christmas when you get this. Buy anyway this is what I really want to do, because I know I have the drive and determination. Well just to let you know a little about me. I'm 19 and my fall semester just finished but I can't wait to go back and hopefully take that aviation course in the spring.

What do you suggest I do to get started? Because I just got my driver's license and I'm looking for a part time job to help support my college tuition and books. So I really don't have money right now. Are the any Scholarships or anything I could apply for financial help.

-Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Merry Christmas! To get started you'll need to get a medical from a certified doctor. Go to:

http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/

You will also need to take an interview once you get closer to your date, a month or so out. Also, take a tour of the facility nearest you to get a feel for ATP. As a female, you might also check out the apartments you'll be staying in.

There are scholarships out there. One link to search is Women in Aviation. The website is www.wai.org. They are a great organization to get involved in. Also AOPA magazine is a good magazine to be subscribed to for information on the latest. There are also student pilot magazines with lots of helpful information about scholarships.

One idea for a job is to go to a local small airport and ask one of the FBOs if they need a desk worker/phones/dispatch airlplanes at a flight school/order fuel/etc. I worked at a flight school to earn money and loved it. I was around the airplane environment all the time, so I really learned a lot! Plus, I received a discount on flying their airplanes, nice!

Have a good weekend Sarah, and I look forward to more questions

Josie
