Hi Jeremy, my name is Noah Miller. I just read your story about the flight you made last Oct. and I really enjoyed it.
I am a junior at excelsior college in NY and I live in CA. I love flying but I haven't had the time to get my private license yet. I am studying information tech but I have always dreamed of being a pilot! I had some heart problems when I was 15 and consequently I have a defibrillator. I called the FAA a few years ago but they said that I couldn't fly commercially because of my health issues. Do you know of a good alternate route to take to still be a pilot? Thank you in advance

Hi, Noah,
Wow, the heart problem is going to be a good sized obstacle to overcome. I don't know much about automatic disqualifiers but you might just have one. In the age of the Internet, the FAA posts every bit of information on their site about medical issues. Your research should start there. Here is the link to the FAA Aeromedical Website. You might also look at this: Virtual Flight Surgeon. I wouldn't go try to get a medical until you have done your research. If it's not an automatic disqualifier, you'll undoubtedly need a waiver from the FAA, etc and you start that process when you go to an Aviation Medical Examiner to get your medical, but beyond that I don't know the process. If it is possible, it's going to be a long road ahead. If not waiver is possible (and it very well may not be), you can probably still get a third class medical and fly as a private pilot. Again, I'm not sure and you'll have to do your research on this one. Fact is, to be a commercial pilot, you'll need to get at least a second class medical. Without it, it's not going to happen. Please let me know what you find out. Jeremy |
