Default Headset question

Heya Bob,

Ive been searching through the forums looking for information on the best type of headsets to buy. All the information I've found says get one that is lightweight and comfortable. A while back you told me to get the best headset I could, because you can never get your hearing back. Another wonderful deployment to fun-filled Iraq has proven that to be, now more than ever, some mighty fine advice.

I have been looking around, and although David Clarks appear to be the most popular brand out there, I dont know much about the different models. They have a David Clark X11 model which seems like a great headset, but at $800+ ...its not going to find its way into my flight bag anytime soon!

So my question is: If you personally had to go buy a new headset of any brand or any model, which would you get, unless your first choice would be that X11, in which case...whats your second choice ?

Thanks Bob!
Jeff

To put in my un-solicited 2 cents worth,

If you can afford them, get the Bose. Very comfortable, very quiet, and fantastic support/customer service. Had one issue last year (cracked a earcup yolk), sent them in, they had them back to me in 5 days AND they were completely refurbished (new mic windscreen, new headstrap fleece, new leather ear cushions), NO CHARGE. I've had mine since 2003, 6 years later (and much use and abuse) they're still fantastic. I know they're pricey, but keep in mind chances are you'll be wearing them for while. Flight training, flight instructing and during your Regional career. Consider it an investment in your future.

Hey Adam,

Your two-cents may have been unsolicited, but its much appreciated! I looked at the Bose headsets on Sporty's and I even read all 43 reviews! Looks like an all around really good headset; high quality, great reviews, and the warranty and service cant be beat...but that price...Holy crap!! I just cant see that happening for me! I looked on ebay for some cheaper Bose headsets, but even used they're incredibly expensive. What would you recommend for someone in the $500-$600 or lower price range?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,

There's actually many good headsets out there in your range. You can never go wrong with Dave Clarks (my first headset). They're actually used by ExpressJet in all our aircraft. Very reliable and durable. Only problem I find is they're a little heavy and if you want ANR they get expensive. LightSpeed makes a nice ANR (Active Noise Reduction, which I strongly recommend) for $499. I know a few guys who use those and like them, BUT they're huge and look kinda goofy (if you care). LightSpeed also makes "in the ear" which alot of guys love (me, not so much, I don't like things in my ears). Bottomline you have alot of choices. I don't know if you have access to any pilot shop's where you're based, but I'm a big fan of trying things on (everyone has different tastes). If you can wait till you get back stateside, that might be the way to go. If not I'd look for the lightest with ANR and go with those.

Good luck and stay safe,

Adam

PS Happy Independence Day!
