Hey Dan my name is Eric Young. I have been fascinated with flight since I was a little kid and am now beginning to approach the idea of possibly flying as a career. I would like some information on what kind of careers there are out there involving aviation, how easily I would be able to acquire a position as a pilot and what I could expect the salary range to be. Any information you could provide would be very appreciated. Thank you

Eric Young

Hi Eric. I just moved your post to make things a little easier to keep track of. How's it going? There are many careers that are associated with aviation such as:

Pilot: Airline, cargo, corporate, charter, border patrol, helicopter, police department pilot, instructor pilots, etc.

Other careers in aviation can be: airplane mechanic, air traffic controller, dispatcher/scheduler for an airline, airplane design and interior engineer, etc.

There are many options to choose from in aviation.

As far as how easy it is to get hired as a pilot varies and depends greatly on the times. For example, 3 years ago when airlines were hiring many, many pilots due to growth and retirements, pilots were getting airline jobs right out of training. Or otherwise 2-3 months of instructing after finishing training and you were flying a jet for a regional airline. Now things have obviously slowed down because of the economy but when things ramp up again it will be even more pilots that are needed to fill the positions. So it's a matter of timing. I think it's beneficial to get your training/ratings done during a downturn so that when things turn around you are right there and ready for the action.

As far as salary range. First officer at a regional airline can be like $18000 a year for the first year and then goes up dramatically the second year to like $30,000. If you theoretically upgrade to captain after 3 years you can make $65000-$85000. Those are ballpark figures and depend on the airline that you get hired with.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Talk to you soon.
