I do recommend that a pilot go to college in addition to their flight training. Many major airlines and corporate flight departments look for their applicants to have a college degree. Some people get their flight training done while they are in college or get their degree after training as well. Remember, ATP can get you all of your ratings in the time it takes to take 1 semester off. So the answer is to do both. Go to ATP and go to college. I started my flight training right after I went back to college and completed my last college course. So my classes ended in late May and I was done with ATP in September.

As for the expense of becoming a pilot. I would say that it is expensive to become a pilot. But it's also expensive to become a lawyer, and a doctor and a vet, etc. Remember that pilots are highly trained professional individuals. So you have to look at it from the right perspective. Flight training is an investment in your future.
