Default Intro

Hi Dan:
My name's Miguel and I'm looking forward to attending ATP in Long Beach, CA early this year. About myself, well I've loved flying ever since I can remember. As a child my parents took me on many flights to mexico and always gave me the window seat. Pretty awsome. Even while growing up I've never changed that mind-set of becoming a pilot. My adventure in making my dream coming true started back when i was 17. I got my 1st taste of flight in a cessna 182. I have to thank my back then boss David Elwell. Ever since after that i've been looking at all the different flight schools, reading all sorts of books and flying Microsoft FSX on my spare time. I've completed ground school at a local community college but its hard continuing when everything is coming out of your own pocket. I have much more to tell but i'll keep this short and I look forward to talking to you.

Hey Dan, My name is Mark Eric and I recieved a notification from ATP that you're going to be my coach. I just want to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself to you. There're a couple of questions I had for you. What is the average age for an entry pilot? because I happen to be taking classes at the University of Phoenix for a bachelor of science in finance, I'll be done with this program sometime next year and I was hoping to start the piloting program then. Most people ask me why I've chosen a career change so late in life; the truth is I've always wanted tofly from when I was young. The principles of flight really intrigued me from when I was little but I got derailed along the way. Now I realise that to be successful you have to no yourself and what you're good at and go for it. Something in me tells me I'll be a great pilot.
One more question, how many hours do you make in a year? I was wondering if its possible for a pilot to work really hard and rack up some hours because I know thats what matters? For me I think I'll need to hit the ground running because I'm a couple of years behind. Please tell me what you think. Thank You

Welcome Mark!

The entry age is all over the place. When I started at comair I was one of the youngest at 21. There were guys that were mid 20s, and mid 30s. I also know of some that have started after 40, so really your not that far behind.

The hours are going to depend. When you finish all of your ratings you will have to find a place to instruct, and that is going to define how many you get. You could go to a college or to a school like atp, and get a lot of hours pretty quick. You could also go to a local fbo and only get a few a month, so it all depends.

I hope all that helps. Let me know what else I can answer for you.

Dan

Thanks alot Dan, I'm 27 years old right now so I'll probably be entering the pilot program at 28 so we're looking at being done with the whole thing at about 30. However, ATP told me that they have 2 programs, one for 5 months which is really intence, and one for 14 months which you complete at your own pace. I was wondering is it possible for me to get started with this one while I attend classes at my other college? The thing is, right now I don't know how the classes work, how many hours a day I have to devote, and the cost. All I know is I want to be in the air ASAP. Please advice..

No problem thats what I am here for. Like you said you the more time you devote the faster you will get the program done. The university course work is what is going to be the decider for when you can go to the airport and fly. You could work on it though while going through college. I would say start with looking into what your college schedule will be then contact atp, and see how they can work with that schedule. Other then that the 5 month program is very intense, but keeps you on your toes. You could also do that during one of your summer breaks from college, then instruct while taking classes. There are many ways to go about it. I hope that helps

Hope all is well

Dan
