Default Introduction

Michael,

My name is Josh, I'm 23, single, and live near Sacramento, CA. I spent 3 years as a Loadmaster on C-5's, and now I'm working in Command and Control. I have about a year left on my USAF enlistment, and I'm trying to figure out my options for flying. I'm applying to the Army Warrant Officer program to be a rotor wing pilot, if I don't get accepted I'll most likely separate and pursue a school like ATP.

My only real concern is finances while going to school. I have a car payment, a few credit card bills, etc. Is it normal for students to work during the time they're there? Obviously I wouldn't be showing up broke, but it would be nice to have some extra cash on hand!

Also, what are the classes at ATP like? Is it a pretty organized class with multiple students, or a more personalized 1-on-1 setting?

Thanks,

Josh

Hi Josh,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for participating in it. And thank you for your service to our country.

Given your experience with the military I think that a school like ATP would suit you well. The program requires a lot of self discipline, focus, dedication and self motivation. The days are pretty packed and the course moves along fairly quickly.

Typically you are paired up with another student throughout the training. The days are usually a mix of some ground school, sim training and flight training. Evenings are spent mostly with you reading, studying and completing homework assignments. With the housing there is always other students around that are at the same level as you. That works well for study groups and quizzing each other.

There isn't really much extra time to have a part time job while in the program. It moves pretty quickly but the harder you work, the faster it's over. The instructor will have you pretty busy so having a part time job would be a really tuff one.

Have a safe and Happy New Year !

Regards,

Michael
