Well its Official. American Eagle is completely removing the Saab from the fleet effective November 2nd. I will be making a Transfer to the Embraer Regional Jet (ERJ) based at DFW. My training class date is set for October 20th, and should last roughly 6 weeks. Once I am done with training and I.O.E on the jet, I will get a $7 pay increase...WhooHoo!!!
I was not senior enough to hold the ERJ at LAX, which is also a good thing because then I would have been the bottom guy on the seniority list. I am still going to live in LA and commute to Dallas. I am looking forward to this new aircraft. I flew the Saab out of DFW for the month of August and, aside from the heat, I like flying out there. It sure does not compare to LA because there is no ocean or snow capped mountains to enjoy... ![]() ERJ.bmp

HAHA...
![]() The Bold print makes it seem like I don't like it at all huh... ![]() I liked DFW because it was a bigger airport with more runways, more departure and arrival procedures than we have at LAX, more airports to fly to and from, different flight crews, thunderstorm dodging... . There was just no scenery to enjoy from the sky like LA. But aside from that it was fun.

Melvin,
Eric with ATP gave me your contact. I had a question about feasibility of training to become an airline pilot. I have a degree in business management, was just laid off from Ford Motor Company and contemplating a career change. Flight school is $70,000. If I were to pick up a position with a regional airline, what would an average first year salary be. When speaking of flight hours, what does "line" and "reserve" mean. Is it common to have 10 to 20 days off a month. Do you see the industry contracting, or do you feel that demand for pilots will continue to increase? Sorry about all the questions, I'm just curious. Thanks. |

Hello Caleb,
Pleasure to meet you. Congrats on the busines degree. Sorry to hear about the lay off...but everything happens for a reason and that will surely open the door to new and exciting things. Well the average first year salary is about $24,000/year. I am just finishing up my first year at American Eagle and I will be posting my first year salary in about 3 weeks. I am hoping that I made more than the average... . "Reserve" means that you are on call. Typically as a new hire you start out on reserve and the company will call you between certain hours for you to do a flight. On reserve you really do not know where you will be flying until you get called. Once you gain some seniority, you will be able to hold a "Line", which is basically a set schedule. So at the beginning of the month you will know exactly where you will be flying to and what time. About the airline industry, check out this link and let me know what you think: Airline Industry Thanks for the questions. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Just a quick update,
I arrived in Dallas on Oct 20th for ERJ 135/140/145 training. I just had my last day of ground school today. My Written Exam is Monday Nov 10th. My Oral Exam is Tuesday Nov 11th. After my Oral Exam I start Simulator Training on Friday Nov 14th. My final checkride is scheduled for Nov 24th. My Line Oriented Flight Training (L.O.F.T) will be Nov 26th. If all goes well, I will be home just in time for Thanksgiving.... .The ERJ is a great plane to learn...10x easier to learn than the Saab.

I passed my Written Exam on Monday....Missed 1 out of 75...Shame on Me...
.I passed my Oral Exam today. It was about an hour and a half long. The ERJ is an easy plane to learn and I was able to answer all of the questions in the Oral with no problem. I start Sim Training on Friday. I lucked up with a 2pm to 6pm sim slot. My sim partner is one of my instructors from when I trained on the Saab. He is moving to ERJ Captain. I just landed back in LA. Going to enjoy a couple of days off. My brain needs a rest.

I passed my Phase Check today, which is basically a mock checkride.
I received the signature that I need from my instructor to take my Final Checkride on Monday from 6-8pm. Time to Make It Happen.
