Hi there Don,

Welcome to the forums!

Great question... and one that I too wondered before I started my training.

Believe it or not... an FAA physical is easier than a physical that you would have with your Primary Care Physician. The difference is... most likely, your PCP isn't certified by the FAA to give a Flight Physical.

Your doctor would have to be an AME (Aviation Medical Examiner), and thus be certified by the FAA to perform the duties of performing flight physicals. That's it really... it's purely a certification thing.

As far as the actual physical goes... it's pretty simple, here's a short list of things on it that your AME will be doing:

Eye Chart
Depth Perception Test
Peripheral Vision Test
Color Blindness Test
Checking Vitals (heart rate, BP, etc.)
Hearing Test
Checking for hernia (Turn and cough please...)
A quick urinalysis

That's about it...

I realize that your regular doctor could easily do these things... but your regular doctor most likley will not have the authorization from the FAA to grant you flight status.

Hope that helps...

Also, here's the AME locator provided by the FAA: http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/

Select your search by city, zip, county, etc... and it will find an AME that will work for you. Ask what their rates are when you call. Some charge more than others... but the exam and the certificate they issue is the same. Also... since you are just starting out... they will most likely just want to issue you a 3rd class Medical Certificate. Instead... ask for a 1st Class Medical Certificate. It's important that you know you can hold that class if you want to work for the airlines or any large flight department.

Let me know how it goes... or if you have any other questions.

In the meantime... please take a moment and introduce yourself if you get a chance. The more I know about you and your individual situation... the more I can help.

Thanks again for joining the forums!

Bob
