What made you want to be an airline pilot?
I’m a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to the field of commercial aviation. I changed careers after 15 years as a Police Officer. Like many of you, since I was a child, I had always dreamed of flying. In 1991 I began my Private Pilot training. I nearly completed it and got distracted with my career, I slowly became a "statistic" of those "who began, but did not finish" their flight training. It haunted me for ten years before I took to the sky again and finished up my Private Pilot License.
I flew for the Sheriff’s Office on an "as needed" basis for a year, mostly looking for lost hunters, dead bodies and prisoner transports. The more I flew, the more I wanted to fly. I slowly became a sort of a junkie to the sky and began looking at options to support my new found habit.
In 2005, I began to research flight schools. I toured the ATP PHX location as well as several other flight schools. The more I researched, the more I was drawn to ATP based solely on my research of multiple flight schools.
After 15 successful years of chasing bad guys, I took an early retirement. The decision wasn’t easy, I had a lot going for me. I had served as Patrolman, Rescue SCUBA Diver, Detective, Narcotics, Under Cover Ops, SWAT, SWAT Commander and Patrol Sergeant. I was awarded the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart.
What I’m getting at, is that it’s never too late to chase a dream! On April 15, 2006 I hung up my gun belt, gun and badge and strapped on a backpack full of books. I started at ATP PHX on April 24, 2006. I completed my training 92 days later with my CFI, CFII, MEI ratings. Everything was as promised and not a penny over budget.
A month later, I began instructing for ATP and six months later I had a job as a First Officer flying an EMB-145 for an airline based in ATL. I stayed with them for a short time and was hired by Skywest in October 2007.
I have no regrets and the phrase: "I always wanted to do that" is no longer in my vocabulary. Don’t be scared to CHASE YOUR DREAM!
