What made you want to be an airline pilot?
After working with ATP in the past, I’m honored to be back and eager to serve as a resource for Career Pilot students. I currently fly for Republic Airlines as a Captain on the Embraer 170 and arrived here via a long and enjoyable journey aided greatly by ATP.
Aviation, in one form or another, has always been a part of my life. I grew up building and flying model airplanes before heading to the Naval Academy where I earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering. In my spare time I coached cycling and raced bikes, taught sailing and scraped pennies together for occasional flying lessons. Lacking the gift of military aviation eyesight, I set to sea on a Navy cruiser after graduation and ran everything from firefighting and ship repairs to missile and radar defense systems while teaching navigation and ship handling to new officers. As much as I enjoyed the many challenges I faced as a Naval Officer, I finally got around to earning my private pilot’s license after my first deployment, and the experience convinced me to rethink what was possible. I researched flight schools and began studying while in the Arabian Gulf for a second time and decided a jump into commercial aviation was feasible, and ATP was easily the smartest route there. After going ashore for the last time, I headed up the road from San Diego to Riverside, CA for the Career Pilot Program and its whirlwind of flying and studying. I finished on time and on budget as nearly everyone does, and was fortunate enough to be hired to instruct at ATP. After a year instructing at the Phoenix and Las Vegas locations I was hired by Chautauqua Airlines.
The challenges I faced as an ATP instructor, teaching many dozens of students from every skill level, day and night, and on tight timelines were an ideal preparation for the demands of airline training. I’ve been flying at Chautauqua and its sister company, Republic for about two and a half years on the Embraer 145, and recently, the 170, and I still haven’t seen a better path to the airlines than ATP.
