What made you want to be an airline pilot?
Good day everyone.
My name is Jerry Dooyes, ATP graduate and First Officer for Comair airlines. Like you, aviation was always something that had sparked my interest. As long as I can remember all I wanted to do for a living was fly.
I grew up in Orange Park, Florida near Jacksonville. After high school all I could think about was going to a university with some sort of flight program, in which I could earn a four year degree and fly at the same time. After comparing several schools I decided on a local university that kept me close to home yet would allow me to attain all my certificates and ratings while earning a degree. My first year was very exciting, but expensive. Once I finished with my private pilot and instrument training I knew that I would not be able to afford both a degree and flying expenses simultaneously. I graduated 3 years later with a degree in Aviation management, and although studying industry trends, market analysis and airport management was rewarding, it did not satisfy my desire to fly for a living.
Being the frequent reader of aviation magazines that I was, I saw an ad for an accelerated flight training program that was within my price range yet offered so much more than any other school I had ever researched. Signing up for the 90 day program at ATP was the best decision I had ever made. Upon completion of the program, I, like many of you will be, was offered a position as a flight instructor at the Jacksonville location, which I gladly accepted. A few months later, the regional airlines really started to hire in full swing and so I decided the timing was right to apply for a First Officer position at Comair. Like so many ATP graduates before me, I was hired almost on the spot.
After all that ATP has done for me, I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to give back and help all of you. I will try my absolute best to answer all of your questions with utmost honesty as well as give advice based on my past experiences and knowledge. These are exciting times in aviation and the opportunity to make flying a living has never been more within your reach.
